Island Hills Chorus Woman of Note ~ 2011
Gina Bartley is Island Hills Chorus’ incontestable choice for this year’s Woman of Note. Gina has given the chorus years of dedication and support; her love and commitment for her chorus has been an example and a mainstay during some very difficult stretches. She is always there to offer support and take action - quietly, unobtrusively, and effectively. Gina’s positive “We-Can-Do-It” attitude is contagious and a wonderful inspiration to the entire Island Hills Chorus.
Gina’s relationship with Island Hills Chorus began over 44 years ago when a friend pestered and pestered her to come to a rehearsal. Finally she relented and came, loved what she heard, and has stayed ever since, for 44+ years! Within her first few rehearsals she met another newcomer who became her carpool buddy, and the two have been good friends ever since. Gina and the other newcomer, Betty Banach, a previous IHC Woman of Note, became the “coffee fairies” and then moved on to the Costume Committee. In any season you would find Gina, together with a group of Island Hills women, cutting and sewing and gluing lots and lots of sparkly stuff to costumes ~ and having lots and lots of FUN in the process!
Gina has been on the Island Hills board numerous times, serving in many capacities, including President. She even served as a Lead Section Leader when there was no one else to take it on, even though by then she had become a Baritone, because the chorus needed Baris. She has even been one of the riser-crew and, even though she is very petite, she has set up and taken down risers many times in her chorus career!
Gina’s high point as a member of Sweet Adelines was when Island Hills WON International Competition in 1978. 1978 was only the second International contest for choruses (prior to that they only had International for quartets). Island Hills’ director had quit and the chorus decided – in Sweet Adelines fashion – to attend with an Assistant Director on the front line. Renee Craig stepped in to help the chorus select its competition music and to lend her support. Island Hills Chorus was 95 strong at that time, and Gina became the travel agent for the members, arranging flights and accommodations for the trip. She remembers listing all the members and charting them on a roll of shelf lining paper which was hung on the wall for all to see! Gina even arranged a side trip to San Francisco, stopping at Hearst Castle and, surprise, surprise: they sang there!
When asked what she loves most about Island Hills Chorus, Gina is quick to answer: The warmth of the members. “Island Hills is a place where women care for and about each other and make beautiful music together. That’s what I love about my chorus!”
Gina has three wonderful children - two sons and one daughter - plus six grandchildren - two boys and four girls. When she isn’t singing and enjoying her family Gina volunteers at St. Francis Hospital and at a local soup kitchen.
Gina is truly a Woman of Note to all who know her!
We are so glad she is a part of our chorus!
